In this Altis white paper, Anastasia Voinou from our Melbourne office talks about Data Lakes and their place in an Information Management architecture.

There is a lot of talk in the market about Data Lakes and how enterprises should be implementing a Data Lake, “Where does a Data Lake fit in the Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence landscape?” and “If I have a Data Lake do I still need my Data Warehouse?”  In this paper we discuss the pros and cons of Data Lakes and their place in an overall Information Management architecture.

Below is an excerpt from the white paper.
Introduction
The concept of a Data Lake has been around since 2010 when it was introduced by Pentaho founder and CTO James Dixon.
But what is a data lake? Does every enterprise need to have one? Should it be used in conjunction or instead of a Data Warehouse (DW)?
There are many opinions about what the definition, content, architecture and use of a data lake should be and opinions vary widely.

This paper provides insight into Data Lakes providing a definition, a comparison with a traditional Data Warehouse and guidelines on the use of data lakes within an existing DW / BI landscape.
